PARK BENCH FOR A GIANT
The origin of this sculpture is accidental.
While refurbishing the golf course adjacent to the sculpture trail we purchased a number of colourful park benches, picnic tables and chairs and rubbish receptacles to place around the course for golfers’ use. All this outdoor furniture was manufactured from recycled plastic and coloured to break the mould of “invisible” outdoor furniture.
With the opening of the Transmission Gully motorway we figured that it would be fun to have the travelling public enjoy the style of these park benches but of course in order for one to be seen it would need to be somewhat larger than normal. Volumetrically it is – somewhat; 300 times as large !

At 8.6 tonne, it is just 136 times as heavy as the normal bench seat.
At this size it’s made from box section steel plating which keeps it sturdy when the famous Wellington wind whips up.
